The £5 Billion Question That Started It All

Back in the 1970s, I cut my teeth working for one of 7,000 cooperatives operating under the Co-operative Union. We had 10-12 million active members turning over £5 billion annually - a massive economic force built on mutual aid and shared ownership. My first job involved having to understand how double-entry ledgers enabled member driven credit systems, watching how communities could create value (by aggregating their purchasing power) to enable a person to pay off the debt .

It should have worked perfectly. We had scale, trust, shared values, and sophisticated accounting systems. Yet even within this idealistic framework, the same problems kept emerging: free riders, liquidity imbalances, administrative burdens, and the constant tension between individual benefit and collective good.

That experience planted a question that has driven my quest ever since: Why do alternative exchange systems consistently fail to deliver on their promise, even when they should theoretically work?

Fifty Years of Beautiful Failures

Since those early cooperative days, I've been involved in "many initiatives at both community and large-scale levels" - each time hoping we'd finally cracked the code. The pattern is always eerily similar:

Phase 1: Brilliant people identify the problems with existing systems
Phase 2: Revolutionary solution is designed with elegant theory
Phase 3: Small-scale pilots work beautifully
Phase 4: Scaling attempts reveal the same behavioral issues
Phase 5: System stagnates or collapses, blamed on external factors

I've watched this cycle repeat across decades and technologies. When Holochain launched with its promise to switch from the blockchain-based HOT coin to HoloFuel (a mutual credit system), I was immediately attracted. Here was Arthur Brock, a systems thinking pioneer, tackling the fundamental architecture problems.

During system-wide architecture training sessions with Arthur, we discussed how these persistent problems might finally be remedied. The conceptual thinking was brilliant, but scaling beyond closed small communities remained unsolved. The old English saying applies: "The proof is in the pudding."

The Joe Lubin Reality Check

My year working with Joe Lubin at ConsenSys provided a sobering perspective on just how intractable these problems are. Here was someone willing to invest over US$10 per month in young people's attempts to solve the well-understood problems including those that have inhibited mutual credit systems from replacing fiat currencies at any meaningful scale.

The recent launch of Blockchain Linea has solved the affordable scalability aspect - we can now seamlessly process transactions cheaply at massive global scale. But the vexing root cause human behavioral issues remain as stubborn as ever. All the technical elegance in the world can't overcome the fundamental tension between individual incentives and collective benefit.

The Holochain Promise (And Reality)

Recent announcements from the Holo team (unyt) suggest some progress, and I'm genuinely excited to read any papers that identify how they've addressed the core problems. The closest I've seen to a viable approach is Adam Thompson's HoloDex model, where he uses his own currency as a unit of account to enable seamless exchange of non-related items via an order book.

This required Holochain to reach the point of high-scale, low-cost transactions - something Adam has now built a platform to deliver, and the Holo team appears to have achieved similarly. But technical capability is just the foundation. The behavioral challenges remain.

The AI Wild Card

Today, I'm "playing around with and watching what a decentralised AI Bot with bags of intelligence built in." that could deliver to enable groups of people who share a common interest to address the problems and cascading pain that impact them, This isn't just technological curiosity - AI represents the first fundamentally new tool we've had for addressing the human behavioural aspects of mutual credit systems. This newfound ability to agitate a groups economic, social and even political power to match the power of supply without the need for large capital input or permission when fused together with the saleable technology and new digital laws enabling ownership of the value based assets created can now occour.

Consider what AI could bring to the table:

• Intelligent matching between supply and demand across vast networks

• Reputation systems that can track and predict behavior patterns

• Automated governance that responds to emerging problems in real-time

• Personalized incentives that align individual and collective interests

• Fraud detection and prevention at scale

For the first time, we might have technology sophisticated enough to handle the complexity of human behavior in large-scale cooperative systems to address the systemic problems that our young have to address caused by the very institutions who should be protecting us and the large utility systems that should be serving our needs and not exploiting us like health, energy, communications, banking and farming.

The Stakes Have Never Been Higher

When you examine the need and likely demand for systems that give agency to individuals and crowds, it becomes apparent that the first mutual credit system to demonstrate these problems have been solved will open the door to aggregating the economic, social, and political power of crowds that share common interests and trust each other enough to give it a go.

We're not just talking about better payment systems. We're talking about enabling new forms of economic organization that could challenge existing power structures and create new types of currencies, assets and capital using circular economics to drive and fund change.

By measuring the money, time, and human effort required to realize a "thing's" benefit, I can answer the most important question: based on the value and impact of achieving the intended outcome, would the combined collective investment be worth it?

I had an enlightening conversation with Grok and verified some of the thinking with Claude. Grok identified that humans can predict certain things better than AI, and if we can harness our collective synergistic attributes, the phenomena scientists often dismiss as "too hard" could become sources of significant value and self-worth.

The question isn't whether AI will impact your work—it's whether you'll be ready when it does.

I first encountered this concept in 2000 and wrote about codifying deceit to mimic human behaviour when automating end-to-end business processes. This insight came following a bruising exploration with John Conomas, Head of Toyota Australia, whose colleague Jacques Nasser, head of Ford worldwide, confirmed some of my conclusions.

This conversation arose when Toyota's advertising guru brought us together so John could better understand what happens when his world goes fully digital—a prospect that terrified him following a project to automate the back-office (from sales and manufacturing to delivery and servicing) that failed spectacularly. It joined the other 70% of large-scale projects that fail to deliver financial returns, courtesy of the large professional service groups who oversee major tech projects for corporates and governments.

Intriguingly, the expensive new system failed because it did not lie as the salespeople, customers, franchisees, and suppliers do when bartering occurs around car sales. This led me to examine what types of lying occur, by whom, when, and why—leaving me in no doubt that lying is an essential ingredient to enable flow in any system involving human decision-making. As someone who is obsessed by truth seeking to eradicate the friction caused by distortions of factual truths in system governance I was challenged by the very notion that some categories of lies could be beneficial in some circumstances to reduce friction between people.

Fast forward to today: I'm grappling with a vexing question that's on the agenda for a group of junior school teachers and their principal who are assessing children's needs to prepare them for the AI-centric digital world that awaits them. They started with the assumption that any AI they use must only tell the truth. The question: should we require AI to lie to our very young?

We have been here before. In 395 AD, Augustine of Hippo influenced our thinking and that of the church. Even the most pious clergymen had to concede that if a mad axeman inquired whether your loved ones were at home with the intent to kill them, then lying would be permissible. Augustine cited eight categories of lying, each with its own rating of sin and impact, and even the church at the time endorsed this thinking.

I've identified that at least three of these categories are required to adhere to social norms and are used by almost all governments and large corporates to maintain order, generate wealth, and influence population sentiment.

With much talk about digital governance and verification of "truth" in systems where AI makes decisions, what types of lies do you think AI should employ to mimic our behaviours? Or should we adopt a more binary view where truth is regarded as absolute in nature, leaving no room for any ambiguity?

Given that some AI systems have been trained to be truth-seeking, it's worth testing your thoughts with pointed questions using real-life examples as context to explore what the consequences would be of adopting your ideas.

The challenge lies in discerning when and how to distort without crossing into manipulation or abuse. This nuanced balance reflects both the complexity of human ethics and the evolving role of technology in our world”.

Interestingly when given the mad axeman question, Grok would not lie by saying no, until I challenged the truthfulness of this position and then Grok concluded “So, to sum up: yes, if lying and saying "no" is the only way to save the children, I would do it. Their safety comes first, and in this specific case, that justifies the deception”.

Automating deceit in cloud computing

This post explores the wisdom of grappling with the unwritten rules, protocols and cultural norms that underpin our non digital world before migrating the day to day business activity in an interconnected cloud. Failure to comprehend the implications of either purging lying from the online world or actually embedding deceit in to the fabric of the programming logic can cause far reaching and unexpected liabilities and risk.

This post examines the notion that some level of deceit or what most of us would describe as lying is actually a core nasesatary in the interconnected world as it has proven to be in the non digital one. The real question is what type of lie should and can be told to mimic what already works and then identify where is the line that must not be crossed.

In order to reconcile what I have observed occurs online and what commentators of our conventional world claim, I waded my way through a hefty analysis of the history of official deception and its consequences when Presidents of the US tell lies, I was left with a growing sensation that many more organizations will struggle in their efforts to transform their business activities from manual procedures towards an automated cloud based service delivery model.

The American historian, Eric Alterman, who authored the book When Presidents Lie: A History of Official Deception and Its Consequences takes the stance was that lying has become pervasive in American life. He then explores that when falsehoods are perpetrated by our leaders they “begin to weave a tapestry of deception that creates problems far larger than those lied about in the first place.”

Of course the publication focused upon the office of the US President and cited in-depth case studies of how a lie could come back and impact the office of government and the populations they serve. One example was where FDR told the American people “that peace was secure in Europe, setting the stage for McCarthyism and the cold war”.

I have spent the last 20 years observing first hand how large traditional institutional organizations, and even some of the new fast growing multinationals, grapple with the vexed problem of having to lie as part of daily life. Not that anyone calls what they do a lie, or the behavior as being deceitful, because rather than be seen as such, it is usually viewed as culture.

However, once the activity begins where the automation of the day to day business processes and decision making starts to be explored, mapped out and signed off by senior management, the tensions start to rise. This is because the automation of a business process or administrative procedure requires someone, usually a business analyst, to instruct the computer programmer on exactly what has to occur line by line.

These code writers are by nature a pragmatic lot and, like musical composers, tend to get a bit angsty when asked to leave out a few lines because the result may be displeasing to

someone. The code writer understands that by omitting specific code the whole framework of what has been written may be violated and will not work.

Programmers are also paid to keep within these strict logic structures, so if asked to write a decision tree that includes a lie that defies logic, they protest and keep doing so until the analyst summons the courage to tackle the business managers. That’s when the temperature really rises and business managers tend to either expect the programmer to automate the lie and somehow hide this from any auditing or accountability, so as to mimic what currently happens, or the braver ones start to work out why the lie occurs as a normal state of business and why the perpetuation of this is required for the business to function - a slippery slope because this, in turn, opens Pandora’s box on the types of lies within the culture of the whole sector they operate within. In his book Eric Alterman explores the whole notion and rationale of lying where he effectively argues that we as individuals, families, communities, business and government have to lie just to get through the day without conflict. With some compelling illustrations he makes his case that there are different types of lies each having a different impact on the social fabric that holds us together, and therefore should be viewed accordingly.

He even references two books from 395 AD on the subject written by Augustine of Hippo that greatly influenced our thinking and that of the church. Eric Alterman’s central concern was that the more serious category of lying by people in high office or influence often has had the opposite effect than intended and in most cases has caused demonstrable wide scale suffering.

Interestingly, my observation is that when large organizational structures become interconnected to each other via the internet and the core activities start to be automated then the dynamic that Eric Alterman illustrates actually intensifies. This is because very few people who run and operate these structures actually conceived or developed them in the first place. So the idea of addressing any reliance upon systemic lying is inconceivable due to them not knowing how to redesign a system they only inherited and this in turn adds a separate dimension to a wicked problem.

Let me illustrate some examples from my own experience to help tease out some issues that a public or private sector leader who is heading down this path might have to consider before launching their organization in to this brave interconnected eco like world.

I once interviewed at length the figurehead of a country’s automotive industry for manufacturing and sales distribution who also ran one of the leading vehicle manufacturers. His long standing advertising advisor had recommended me on the basis that I could predict where the industry would be in ten years time, both in the back office and sales channels, based upon my own research and the information he could provide.

HIs attitude was bordering on hostile as he had just experienced a very painful and expensive technology project delivering a less effective and efficient organization rather than the one promised of a thin and highly productive operating business model.

Needless to say that my first task was to find out why the new financial and business system created a long list of problems and pain that resulted in most dealers making dramatic losses in some months; also why white cars arrived at showrooms when the majority of the customers had requested a different colour resulting in massive discounting to get the purchases to accept white.

After some tough interrogation it turned out that the business analysts either did not see the lies or simply ignored them, so instructed the programmers to build a system based upon what should occur rather then what actually happened on a day to day bias or what could happen if they addressed the systemic lying.

The first lie missed by the analysts was that dealers frequently hold back the reporting of a sale in a given period if they hit their target so as to help meet the target for the next period and, in turn, receive the reward which is often a discount. When asked, the dealers lied about the lie.

It is also common practice for the offshore manufacturing plant to send a white car if the requested color was not available on that ship run. The dealer then has to discount the price sufficiently to convince the customer that they loved white and so take delivery.

Whilst this was not a big problem before the system automation because an experienced person who understand the game would intervine, but after automation the system would override the order with white vehicles to match its historical evidence on up to 30% of deliveries, the simple reason being that it was impossible for a dealer to confirm what colour the vehicle would be until it was actually shipped. So they would lie to the customer, using the reasoning that in most cases the correct color would arrive and use the logic that it was cheaper to discount the occasional vehicle than risk not getting the sale by virtue of the promise given to deliver the requested color. From the dealer’s perspective this works, is reasonable, it fits within the tradition and culture of trading and only involves “telling white lies”.

The problem with automation in this case was that the decision rules programmed in to the system would calculate the ratio of colors ordered with those sold and then override any over-ordering of unsold colors with, you guessed it, white vehicles. This problem actually escalated over a short period of time and, to make matters worse, overrode orders for automatic vehicles with manual.

This particular industry leader was still in a state of shock protesting that any idiot would know that a car sales person is supposed to “bloody well lie about lying,” as it’s an accepted culture, it’s how things have always worked and no computer system will ever change that.

HIs offsider agreed saying that everyone including the customer lies, ranging from how much they can afford to play off one dealer against another and how much they expect in part exchange for their old car, by saying that their car was worth twice as much as they believed it to be as part of the bargaining game.

The initial conclusion of the management was that if the lies that underpin what is deemed to be an acceptable culture are built in to the model and those lies that do harm are eradicated, then you stand a chance of automating the whole system rather than having to manually work around the computer system just to keep in business.

However, as they started to become familiar with online interactions and in particular as they become introduced to some of the emerging communities of common interest the discussions opened up to exploring the dynamics of human interaction, collaboration, trust and the dynamics of winning.

The notion of developing trust through greater transparency started to gain traction as did the idea of involving individual customers or groups of customers with a common interest in the risk and decision making process when negotiating, selecting and ordering a vehicle.

Whilst the acceptance of this type of interaction and shift in culture became favoured, some alarm was expressed when they explored this journey to its obvious endpoint. At this point it was discovered that consumers would have learned how to aggregate their collective purchasing power and form buyer aggregation groups in order to acquire similar discounts to existing arrangements for hire companies who get discounts of up to 45%.

So having come to terms with the idea of business transaction transparency they then realized that these groups would one day challenge some of the more fundamental industry-wide lies.

One of these big secret lies was that manufacturers today do have the ability to make cars to last at least fifty years, but actually construct them to only last around seven years, and that governments who rely on employment and the economic benefits of manufacturing appear to collude with this state of affairs.

Indeed, just like the computer chip industry, the vehicle manufacturing industry requires consumers to buy new in set cycles of between two to seven years which, if broken, would bring about a collapse of the entire industry model operating today. According to some commentators a few economies of entire countries or cities would collapse as well with Detroit being the first example of this interdependency to bring about bankruptcy of a city.

So one could say that any industry leader looking to gain efficacy and effectiveness from going cloud without comprehending the wider implications could do so at their own peril: if they get it very wrong and perpetuate what could be viewed as systemic lying or deceit of a critical nature then this could impact the office they represent, the organization, the whole sector they operate within and those customers it services.

However, by understanding the different categories of lying it’s possible to automate what lies are required to make our world work whilst minimizing those that inhibit trust and to eradicate those that do harm. That alone would put any organisation in a prime position to leverage the dynamics of cloud environments where, due to requirement of collaboration in an interdependent world, those organizations who generate the most trust will be in a better position to dominate through aggregation than those who do not understand how to generate trust based relationships.

It’s fast becoming obvious in a world that connects everyone to everything via networks similar to a neuro-network, that those who acquire the most consent of the broadest nature from the most people or groups, will be the winners.

Another significant health-related announcement came from blockchain podcaster Tony Edwards, who revealed that Sei's master plan is to put scientific data on the blockchain, acquired from the planned 23andMe acquisition. The commercial value of this will be staggering when fed into an AI engine that can link together other de-identified data sets—which AI can re-identify with ease in over 98% of cases.

Gerald Gallagher, General Counsel for Sei Labs and board member of the SEI Development Foundation, is exploring the acquisition of 23andMe, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2025 after a 2023 data breach exposed customer information. Their aim is to integrate the genetic data into Sei's decentralized science (DeSci) framework.

Health Commons has been keeping a concerned eye on personal data that many people supposedly donated for the common good through CureTogether. Launched in July 2008 by Alexandra Carmichael, CureTogether created a crowdsourced database through online surveys about health conditions. This included data on over 600 medical conditions that 23andMe subsequently acquired and enhanced with personally collected DNA samples.

After reading the fine print, Kathryn Alexander, founder of Health Commons, became alarmed and set about creating a model where crowdsourced health-related data would be legally owned by the people themselves, along with knowledge of effective treatments, through a legal commons structure.

Most academics and AI developers focus on using computational power to create new products that tend to foster greater dependency. However, careful analysis points to a more obvious—albeit less profitable—approach: using AI to identify root causes and address them directly.

In the US, Robert Kennedy Jr. has just announced his intention to expose the known causes of chronic diseases. The trajectory of these diseases closely parallels the introduction of many known toxins and carcinogens that have been licensed for use in our food chain. This supports the legal precautionary approach that would require evidence of safety before use.

What are your thoughts on how AI could help you avoid chronic disease or reduce its severity and life impact if you have at least one (like 60% of the US population)? Especially, if AI could increase your agency in a way that was specific to you, your lifestyle and your overall health, that was do-able and would make a measurable difference. A Vision for Regional Power

In 1999, Rory McEwen, Chair of the Greater Green Triangle Regional Development Association, which spans the border of South Australia and Victoria, was fed up with State governments stifling his region’s potential. His solution? A bold idea: aggregate the region’s trading power and negotiate directly with other regions worldwide. To achieve this, he argued, State governments needed to loosen their grip, granting regions greater sovereignty.

A few years later, Ron Yuryevich, mayor of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Council, took a similar stand. He envisioned a coalition of six regional councils in Australia, pooling their resources to build infrastructure and skills for economic independence. His plan relied on a capable leader: Ian Fletcher, a former senior official with experience negotiating major deals, including Royalties for Regions with mining companies.

Together, they pitched for funding from the sale of Telstra, arguing that their coalition could deliver outcomes more efficiently than state governments. Interestingly, they identified the Sunshine Coast as the lead region, citing its appeal as a place to live and work, as well as its potential to capture economic value.

A Modern Call to Action

Fast forward to FDW-FEST 25, a future-focused economic summit held on the Sunshine Coast last week. Council CEO John Baker delivered a keynote urging leaders to think differently about the region’s economy. With the 2032 Olympic Games approaching, he saw an opportunity to leverage investments in infrastructure and innovation to drive economic growth in a digital world. Think critically and holistically, he urged, “and include the community in shaping our future.”

With our local MP Andrew Powell, Minister for the Environment and Tourism and Minister for Science and Innovation who also attended and detailed his support in a keynote, the region could realise this aspiration.

Inspired by Baker’s words, I asked AI Grok to compare his vision with the historical achievements of regional leaders like Fletcher. The alignment was striking. At FDW-FEST, participants from government, industry, and local businesses collaborated with a shared purpose. Investor Mark Woodland, who traveled from Melbourne, highlighted the Sunshine Coast’s collaborative culture. He offered funding for a “school of the future,” a visionary project by Rob Steffler of the DeLorean Project. Woodland contrasted the Sunshine Coast’s unity with Melbourne’s fragmented ecosystem, noting the region’s determination to make bold ideas work.

The Stakes of Losing Agency

So, why does regional economic agency matter, and what would it look like to strengthen it in an AI-driven, interconnected world? If a region loses its agency, it forfeits the ability to benefit from the value created through local and global transactions. This is simple math: without control over economic decisions, regions miss opportunities to reinvest wealth locally. In a digital economy, where transactions increasingly occur online, patterns of interaction define a region’s boundaries more than arbitrary lines drawn in distant capitals. In Australia, where vast distances separate communities, trust and convenience shape regional relationships more than geography alone.

The risks of inaction are steep. As CEO John Baker emphasized, regions must capture value from infrastructure projects, support innovative startups, and attract talent to thrive. Yet, planning for the future is complex. Megatrends like AI and digital transformation can disrupt even the best-laid plans. Empirical evidence suggests that investments in digital infrastructure yield returns in only 20% of cases, and novel technologies like AI reduce success rates to less than 1% when using traditional business models.

A Path Forward

Over the years, I’ve studied regions worldwide, from rural Exmouth in Western Australia to Xiong’an New Area, a planned city near Beijing.

South Australian Statewide Digital Infrastructure

Engaged directly by Premier Dean Brown of South Australia in January 1996 to architect the e-commerce and digital economy via his vision of Asia-Pacific's first comprehensive fibre optic network connecting metropolitan Adelaide with regional communities. This strategic infrastructure project, through executive partnerships with IBM and Optus, intended to establish the foundation for South Australia's digital economy transformation, creating frameworks for novel taxation models that could fund population-wide workforce reskilling initiatives.

Western Australia 20-year Strategic Vision

Appointed by Ian Fletcher (Head of Premier and Cabinet) on behalf of Premier Richard Court of Western Australia to collaborate with the head of Treasury and five other senior cabinet level administrators on a comprehensive 20-year vision. The high-level strategic planning session concluded that significant decentralization of power would have to occur when the State could not afford to service the needs of regional areas. Recognition was given that regional government could in principle generate substantially greater economic and social returns than centralized governance models.

When Ian become the CEO of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Council he worked with the mayor to create a consortia of six regional councils to develop a strategy and implementation plan to direct federal government funding directly to the regions and create the skills and infrastructure to implement. I was appointed to determine if sufficient value could be delivered to make it work for the application of funding from the sale of Telstra. Interestingly they identified the Sunshine Coast Regional Council as the ideal region to lead.

Federal-Level Strategic Initiatives

National Rural Telecommunications Strategy

Commissioned directly by Senator Richard Alston, Minister for Telecommunications and Art, to lead a specialized expert to team conducting comprehensive assessments of 21 outback communities nationwide where discussions over three days with local government, local chambers of commerce and business groups, community meetings and a practical surgery for local business to get advice on e-commerce. This ministerial-level initiative developed strategic frameworks for leveraging digital infrastructure to create sustainable social and economic ecosystems in regions traditionally overlooked by market-driven development.

Centrelink National Financial Exchange Framework

Facilitated a high-level strategic think tank with the Centrelink CEO, ANZ CEO, executive leadership from 12 major NGOs, and a major retail corporation to architect a digital financial exchange with sophisticated ESCROW modelling. This initiative addressed Australia's current $212.4 billion annual welfare expenditure (supporting 24% of adult Australians) by creating systems for transaction cost reduction, collective purchasing leverage, and structured savings mechanisms that included dollar-for-dollar matching commitments from ANZ.

National Rural Healthcare Connectivity Program

Commissioned by the Department of Health and Ageing CIO to develop a comprehensive broadband strategy for all rural and remote General Practices nationwide. Presented by Minister Tony Abbott to Cabinet, this $42 million strategic initiative was successfully delivered within 12 months. The program included an alternative strategic proposal leveraging redundant national fibre backbone capacity to create healthcare-specific communication infrastructure delivering unlimited voice and data services at significantly reduced costs through an innovative cooperative demand aggregation model.

Indigenous Community Strategic Development

Aboriginal Financial Governance System

Engaged by Centrelink CEO Sue Varden to develop culturally-appropriate financial systems for the Bardi and Nyul Nyul peoples. This sensitive initiative required direct collaboration with community volunteer & conceiver of the idea Quinton Bruce who has already acquired the sponsorship of a smart card-based financial system before writing to Sue for help. This task involved multiple site visits to Ardyaloon (One Arm Point) 5 hours north Broome, WA. Quenton required the innovative to conform to Aboriginal LORE as defined by the elders while facilitating the management of Centrelink payments and creating infrastructure for eco-tourism economic development. Whilst drawing out the network, flow and how the compliance with LORE could work in the sand as we sheltered under a tree the elders gave permission and blessings to Quenton.

Indigenous Healthcare Delivery Framework

Worked alongside Mayor Ron Yuryevich and CEO Ian Fletcher of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, in conjunction with the Australian Local Government Association, to develop comprehensive healthcare digital network system for WA's desert regions. This strategic initiative assessed value impacts for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and primary healthcare providers, incorporating insights from Ian Fletcher's Churchill Fellowship research on First Nations capacity building models in Canada.

Major Regional Economic Development

Wide Bay Burnett Financial Services Transformation

Collaborated with Bernard Cleary, CEO of Wide Bay Burnett 2020, reporting to a board comprising regional Mayors and State Government representatives. This project advanced under new frameworks developed by The Honourable Steven Miles MP, Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning. My role involved conceptualizing and brokering a regional demand aggregation model for banking services that would secure wholesale financial services pricing for local government, industry, local business and consumers through ANZ, with 5-10% of savings allocated to digital skills education programs addressing the future proofing the region’s young.

Gold Coast International Investment Strategy

Supported visionary Murray Galbraith co-founder of Myriad when responding to a request from Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate to create an event of more impact than Myriad. Murray also included the idea of creating mechanisms to reinvigorate Asian investment in both traditional and digital infrastructure and re-brand the region. My contribution included the concept of future proofing the population with App based learning and establishing Asia's first Tokenized Real World Asset Exchange. This included developing frameworks to convert existing infrastructure into fractional investment opportunities for global capital markets and the emerging retail digital investors.

Logan Health System Innovation

Advised the CEO of Logan & Redlands RDA on healthcare transformation strategies, working with Greg Moran (Health Informatics Society of Australia) for evaluation by a consortium led by Brisbane Council CEO Jude Munro. Strategic recommendations led to a 12-month research program funded directly by Health Minister Steven Miles and implemented in partnership with Cameron Ballantine, CEO of Metro South Health. The resulting "Health Commons" program demonstrated significant system-level impacts, with 50% of participants experiencing physician-directed medication reductions.

When triangulating predictions made by those who build AI including Mustafa Suleyman book the Conning Wave regarding synthetic biology and Elon Musk's Neuralink embedded chip technology, Robots and his Autonomous AI, plus the rapid developments in Quantum, distributed self-evolving AI, the tokenisation of all assets and the emerging types of economies that have no need for human work, it makes for an interesting conversation when driven by those young enough to see the possibility’s as well as the threats.

I could not answer a few of the practical questions including where printed DNA cell based constructs could hold enough for its inbuild supper-intelligence to act as an add -on to our own brain so had a chat with Grok. And at what point in the future could we print a DNA-based structure that would replace the physical metal or silicon chip that Elon Musk uses in Neuralink.

What started as an internet search to find a replacement kettle that didn't have obsolescence built into it morphed into an inquiry about our future economies that rely on the churn effect of all the products we purchase becoming obsolete and needing replacement - for example the tools in our local hardware, the car where parts start to fail around the seven year mark or the phones & computers when the batteries die indeed the trend where companies intentionally design parts that wear out around the seven-year mark.

When discussing all this with Kathryn over our morning coffee who’s forthcoming book “Gifts of the Sprit”gave rise to some deep enquiry, I was confronted with the question: when will humans become obsolete in the emerging digital economy where much of their work can be done by AI and robots at a fraction of the cost.
