As a boy in the English woodlands, I altered the flow of streams just to watch what happened downstream. I couldn’t make letters or numbers behave in the straight lines school demanded — but I could absorb an entire system, replicate it in my mind, introduce a single new element, and watch in silence what unfolded. I could think without thinking.

That same instinct has shaped a lifetime of seeing what others couldn’t measure. In the 1980s I predicted a connected world where anyone could reach any information, anywhere — the first comprehensive account of the Internet in a major British newspaper, written at a time when most leaders didn’t believe it existed. The byline credited someone else. It was the first of many times existing systems rejected what they couldn’t categorise.

Today that childhood stream has become a discipline.
